I strive to always be in an evolving relationship with my social work practice, actively braiding social justice, education and advocacy, and art tenets.
With decades of experience I am deeply conscious of how identity and intersectionality shape both my experiences and my roles within systems of oppression and privilege. As a white, cishet female with a changing ability status, and as a Jew of Color with Greek and Sephardic heritage, my worldview is profoundly influenced by my roots, including being born in Germany and raised in Chicago. These experiences continuously inform my relationships with students, clients, and the communities I serve as well as my own work, learning, listening, practice and growth.
Living in Chicago for most of my life, raising a family, and building a life with my partner, I began my professional journey in education. Transitioning from teaching to social work was a pivotal step toward embodying my truest humanity.
My work as a School Social Worker emerged from a desire to understand and transform how educational structures impact students' well-being. I believe that to foster equitable relationships with all the people for whom I serve, systems themselves must be reimagined to eliminate harm and uphold equity.
Collaboration, rooted in ever growing trust, equity, cultural competence, autonomy, and honoring and believing lived experiences, is the foundation of the just, inclusive, and inspiring lives I aim to support.
I am honored to engage with and support you as you seek a way forward. The questions we raise and consider together will help you recognize your strengths, skills, and knowledge and identify your next best steps on the path that leads you closer to who you authentically are.
Testimonials
“I have had the privilege of knowing Ms. Doolas for several years and have maintained contact with her throughout high school. She has consistently provided exceptional care and compassion, always going above and beyond to offer support in any area where it was needed. Her guidance has been instrumental in helping me develop confidence, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. Her impact on my personal growth has been profound, and I deeply value her mentorship”.
Student
“I had the privilege to collaborate with and learn from Jena during our five years together in the public school setting. Jena drew on a wealth of knowledge, compassion, creativity, and relational wisdom when working with colleagues, students and student families. I witnessed conversations and connections between her and her students that were genuine, insightful and vulnerable. Jena was always willing to be flexible and open to multidisciplinary ideas which made our co-treat groups exciting (and full of painting opportunities!) for us and our students. Jena modeled strong child advocacy and parent communication/education. She was an excellent communicator both in person and through email. I watched her students voluntarily seek her counsel, laugh with her, feel safe in her presence, and grow.”
Jenny Cook, Occupational Therapist
“Jena Doolas has been an incredible support for both my teen and my younger daughter who is on the spectrum. She helped my older daughter open up and work through challenges. She worked wonders with my younger daughter, helping her come out of her shell and getting her to socialize. Her ability to connect with kids and guide families is a gift and truly special!”
